The Seoul Lady

Well, it's official! I have arrived in the Land of the Morning Calm and am loving it. I actually haven't experienced jet lag, which is unusual - but I'm not arguing.

Everyone should visit this vibrant city and I'm only saying that after 4 days here. The city is so safe and clean and public transportation is wonderful.

My school is legit, however, it should be challenging work since I am going to be teaching advanced English classes (I wish I listened during those grammar lessons in elementary school!). After two days of orientation/observation at the school, this weekend I ventured out into the big city. I have only explored the neighborhoods of Hongdae and Itaewon and have been mesmerized, I can only imagine what other districts have to offer.

The international area of Itaewon - a conglomeration of cultures, a great place to buy western goods, have a pint of decent beer and reminisce over the cuisine of back home...

Notice the Quiznos and Coffee Bean above. There are many US chains here, even a Taco Bell.

An example of the clean subways. They all have a glass wall protecting people from the oncoming train and tracks. It seems like the Korean government really takes an interest in the safety of its citizens...

I think Hongdae will be my favorite area of Seoul. It is a university district with lots of live indie music venues, cute cafes, and hipster bars...

I happened on this Free Market in Hongdae that happens every Saturday until December (when it gets ridiculously cold). The quality of crafts here was awe-inspiring. I can't wait to come back here when I get my first paycheck!

Also, another hidden gem in Hongdae is the infamous cat cafe! I have been so excited to go to one of these, being a cat lover. Basically, you pay a minimal fee which gets you entry to the cafe and one beverage. Then, you get to kick it with kitties - my fave. I will have to return to this...

So far so good! My first week of teaching begins after the weekend, so we'll see how I feel after that. I'm pretty sure my opinions of this city won't change.

P.S.
Did I mention the food is to die for! More to come on that...
